Hats Off, and Prayers to an Old Friend

Not long before I started writing Chloe’s blog in July, I learned that my good friend who I’ve known since childhood, had been diagnosed with cancer. We had been corresponding back and forth about his medical treatments of chemotherapy, radiation, and now an upcoming operation. Having lost my brother to cancer in May, I also understood what each of these specialized treatments require in terms of both physical and mental stamina.
When Chloe unveiled the blog’s official hat and logo, I knew we had to send him, and his young son a hat, after he jokingly mentioned the chemo had left him looking like that bald “Kojak” fellow played by Telly Savalas.
When the hats arrived at his home, I received an email thank you that had the simple phrase, "They Came," along with a picture of them sporting their hats. "Hats off to you Alan for our enduring friendship, and our prayers for a full recovery."
