Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Imitation is the Sincerest
Form of Flattery
There is an old saying that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” In other words, if someone is willing to imitate your actions that must mean they want to be just like you. Now if you’re a dog owner, I’m sure you’ve also seen how dogs can perform that human trait of imitation.

According to scientific studies dogs actually possess a form of selective imitation when they mimic each other’s behavior, and it is theorized that dogs perform in this way as a more efficient way to get something done. This could be the reason why a dog will follow your spoken command especially if the end result means getting them their favorite treat.

Trudy, Chloe’s sister, demonstrated this unique form of imitation by closely following the actions of Sophie an elder cocker spaniel that lived in the same household.

The photographs below taken when Trudy was a puppy clearly captures her desire to be very much like Sophie at that moment. It’s actually uncanny how she is able to mimic each of Sophie’s expressions. No doubt, this human trait is simply another reason why we love our dogs like family members.
