After spending some time on the trail this morning hunting
rabbits, Chloe and I ran into Sunny, one of the very few cocker spaniels that
we have met during our daily walk. The two dogs greeted each other with
a courteous nose bump before our walk continued to the park.
Having not seen to many spaniels like Sunny proves that although still popular throughout American households, the cocker spaniel registration numbers have declined over the years. According to the
American Kennel Club (AKC), the American Cocker Spaniel had a 25-year run in
the number one spot as the most popular breed beginning in 1936-1952 and again
in 1983-1990. In 2012 the cocker spaniel ranked as the 27th most popular breed
in the United States.
